How grocery markdowns work

Most supermarkets cut prices in two ways. The weekly ad is planned in advance: a set of sale prices that starts on the same day every week, usually Wednesday, and runs for seven days. Markdowns and clearance are different. The store lowers the price on items it needs to move, like meat near its sell-by date, seasonal food after a holiday, or products it is discontinuing, and those prices are set store by store.

The weekly ad is easy to find. Markdowns are not, because they rarely appear online and change from one store to the next. That is the gap Penny Meals fills: it checks the shelf prices at the stores near your ZIP code, compares them with what the same store charged before, and shows you what actually dropped.

Once you know what is cheap, dinner gets easier. A marked-down protein, a vegetable that is in season, and a pantry staple you already own make a meal that costs a few dollars a serving.
