Ingredients

Prices are from Publix the week of October 18, 2026. Sale prices change every week and differ by store.

Steps

  1. Slice the peppers into strips and dice the onion. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add peppers and onions, cook for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. While the vegetables cook, score the hot dogs and grill or pan-fry them in a separate skillet until browned, about 5 minutes.
  4. Toast the buns lightly. Place two hot dogs in each bun and top with the sautéed peppers and onions.

Why it’s cheap

3 of the 7 ingredients were on sale at Publix the week of October 18, 2026, led by stahl-meyer hot dogs at $0.83 instead of $1.65.

The sale items rang up $5.23 under their regular prices.

Penny Meals prices a dinner by the share of each package you actually cook, adds an estimated shelf price for anything that wasn’t on sale, and counts pantry staples like oil and salt as free. That came to $1.21 a serving, or $4.84 for 4 servings.
