Ingredients

Prices are from Walmart the week of October 18, 2026. Sale prices change every week and differ by store.

Steps

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add diced onion and cook 3 to 4 minutes until soft.
  2. Add garlic and okra or celery, cook 2 minutes.
  3. Add the frozen crabs and chicken broth, then sprinkle paprika and cayenne. Bring to a simmer and cook 10 to 12 minutes until crabs are heated through.
  4. While the gumbo simmers, heat the rice pouch according to package directions.
  5. Divide rice among bowls and ladle the gumbo over top.

Why it’s cheap

2 of the 10 ingredients were on sale at Walmart the week of October 18, 2026, led by wild caught gumbo crabs at $4.00 instead of $8.76.

The sale items rang up $5.93 under their regular prices.

Penny Meals prices a dinner by the share of each package you actually cook, adds an estimated shelf price for anything that wasn’t on sale, and counts pantry staples like oil and salt as free. That came to $1.44 a serving, or $5.76 for 4 servings.
